How can I help my child succeed in school?
First and foremost, you are the expert on your child. But every now and then, we might need new tools in our parent/guardian "toolbox." Here are a few tips to try:
How do I join PTA?
Joining PTA is easy. The cost is $__. PTA envelopes are available in the school office. You can send in a note with your child requesting one be sent home.
How can I keep track of my child's progress?
DeSoto County Schools uses PowerSchool for attendance and grades.
How much is breakfast and lunch? How do I pay for it?
Breakfast is offered through the Explorers' Club every Wednesday in the Rotunda. Options include a chicken biscuit ($3.50), cinnamon roll ($1.25) and juice ($0.50). Cash is taken at the time. Students in grades 3-5 stand in line while supplies last.
Lunch is $2.75 (Reduced lunch $0.40).
Lunch money is taken directly to the cafeteria by your child each morning. If you are sending in a check it can be made payable to "Pleasant Hill Elementary Cafeteria." You can also pay online at My Payments Plus. To see what's for lunch, go here.
I need to pick up my child early or change their transportation to and from school. How do I do that?
Please contact the school office ASAP. Without a note or call from you, your child is released according to what is written in their file.
Students will not be dismissed after 2 PM for unplanned parent pick-ups. Parents will need to wait with the "car rider" group until dismissal at 3:10 PM. Bus riders are released at 3:25 PM.
PLEASE have your ID ready to show the security camera at the front office. Without an ID, students will not be released.
How can I help my child choose a book to read at home?
Allow your child to pick a book they might be interested in. Have them read aloud the first few pages to you. If they are able to read it smoothly, pronouncing each word correctly and with few prompts from you on what words are, then they should be able to read it independently. However, if their reading is "choppy", has 5 or more mispronounced/unknown words or words left out, then the book is too hard for independent reading. Don't despair...you can read this book to your child.

What can my child do for their 5-Minute Math homework?
There are many different activities that your child can do. The easiest thing is to do oral drills with your child. Question them on their addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts. They should be able to tell you the answer within 5-7 seconds. You can also ask them to tell you the time and elapsed time on a non-digital clock. Flashcards are also another easy option.
